“At the end of the month, Jim Mullen will be leaving the department. We greatly appreciate Jim’s service and the work he has done for our country. Wiley Deck, currently a senior policy advisor to the secretary and former FMCSA director of government affairs, will assume the role of deputy administrator of FMCSA,” a DOT spokesperson told HDT in an email.

Wiley also is expected to become acting administrator. Mullen took over acting duties after FMCSA Administrator Ray Martinez stepped down last October to take on a different position within the Department of Transportation. At that time, Mullen, who was FMCSA chief counsel, became deputy administrator, while Deputy Administrator Alan Hanson moved over to chief counsel.

According to the FMCSA's website, Deck began his federal career in 1994, serving on the staff of Congressman John L. Mica (FL), where he worked for more than 23 years, culminating with six years as the Chief of Staff. Prior to joining FMCSA, he also served as the director of oversight and investigations for the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure.

"With his decades-long Capitol Hill experience and special focus on national and regional transportation issues, Wiley understands the critical role that the truck and interstate bus industries play in keeping our nation's economy strong and continually moving forward," says the FMCSA bio. "He is equally committed to safety and he ardently supports expanding and enhancing FMCSA stakeholder partnerships and collaboration toward the goal of reducing commercial vehicle-involved crashes and improving safety for all travelers on our highways and roads."
