European truckers who won tax concessions through protests and blockades over high fuel taxes may have won only temporary relief.
The European Commission met in Brussels yesterday to discuss phasing out the reduced excise taxes granted by the French, Italian and Dutch governments to truckers by the beginning of 2003.
According to the Agence France Presse, the European Union's excise regulation states that the same rate of excise duties must be applied to all users, but does allow for around 100 exemptions.
France and Italy granted special concessions on taxation on diesel fuel following mass protests by truckers. The two countries have the highest number of exemptions for levying excise duties in the 15-member European Union, the report said.
