The average price of diesel dropped nearly 5 cents per gallon this week but remains over $4 a gallon.


Nationally, the average price for a gallon of diesel fell to $4.09. While still an average of 30 cents per gallon more expensive than it was a year ago at this time, the price of diesel fell all across the nation last week, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration's weekly report.

It's the sixth week in a row of $4-plus diesel prices. The one region where diesel fell below $4 a gallon this week was the Gulf Coast, which had the cheapest prices at an average of 3.995 per gallon.

On the West Coast, which historically has seen some of the highest prices at the pump, the price for a gallon of diesel fell 7.6 cents to $4.32, and by 8 cents in California.

The average nationwide price of gasoline also fell 5.2 cents to land at $3.83 per gallon. Prices are still up on average 32 cents per gallon over last year.

Crude oil prices also fell on the New York Mercantile Exchange. On Monday, benchmark crude prices fell 96 cents, allowing the price per barrel to settle at $91.93.
