Union workers on the U.S. side of the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel at the Canadian border are back at work
after they ratified a three-year labor agreement with the Detroit & Canada Tunnel Corp.
Employees returned to work on the midnight shift Wednesday, May 22. They were locked out of their jobs April 24, but the tunnel remained open, staffed by supervisory employees on the U.S. side. (The Canadian side is operated by members of Canadian Auto Workers (CAW) Local 195, whose contract is in effect through January 31, 2003.)
The new contract, covering 29 U.S. employees, runs from November 14, 2001 to November 13, 2004. Contract negotiations had been ongoing since the U.S. ATU Local 1564 contract expired on November 13, 2001.
The Tunnel is owned jointly by the cities of Detroit and Windsor, and operated by the Detroit & Canada Tunnel Corp.
