The government of Canada is shelling out $1 million to fund a pilot initiative to encourage the use of fuel-efficient technologies in heavy-duty trucks
. The government will partially fund successful applicants, up to $100,000, who install SmartWay certified technologies.
"While this is a step in the right direction, the industry is still looking for a coordinated, dedicated program of rebates and appropriate tax treatments for all the aerodynamic technologies available to the industry," said David Bradley, CEO of the Canadian Trucking Alliance.
The CTA has encouraged the industry to apply for rebates and tax incentives to invest in these types of technologies to improve fuel efficiency and environmental performance.
"While there have been small programs here and there, what is lacking is a cohesive, targeted plan to achieve meaningful emissions reductions and improved fuel efficiency for industry that these technologies can make happen," said Bradley. "Society's environmental goals and the economic goals of the industry have never been more aligned."
