A shipment surcharge announced earlier this week to help independent truckers in Ontario deal with the rising cost of diesel fuel will be made retroactive, reported the Toronto Sun.
The province intends the diesel fuel surcharge to kick in on contracts back to Sept. 1, the paper said.
Shippers will pay a surcharge to owner-operators on government contracts to offset the 75% rise in fuel prices they’ve faced in the past year, thanks to a deal struck last weekend between the province and the National Trucking Association.
Economic Development Minister Al Palladini said that shippers had already volunteered to pay a surcharge but that the government has not been applying pressure.
