Martin M. Thomasen, inspector for Municipal District of Foothills No. 31 in High River, Alberta, Canada, took first place in the Inspectors’ Essay Contest — the first phase of the International Roadside Inspectors’ Competition sponsored by the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance, Bethesda, MD.
The contest asked 19 certified inspectors representing the U.S. and Canada to write 2,500 2,500 words on the theme, “Safety — it’s worth checking for.” Thomasen’s essay was chosen for its thoughtful discussion of future initiatives that must be taken to increase safety, such as improved industry relations and improved roadside inspection selection systems.
As the winner, Officer Thomasen will receive an all-expenses-paid trip to Minneapolis, MN, where he will serve as a judge during the Challenge ’97 competition. The full-scale, hands-on International Inspectors Competition will be held the week of Aug. 18.
