Midway City Sanitary District (MCSD) has opened a new compressed natural gas (CNG) fueling facility in Westminster, Calif., the waste management agency announced.

The $3 million station, which is located at 14451 Cedarwood Ave., will supply CNG to MCSD's refuse truck fleet. MCSD provides curbside solid waste collection and recycling in Westminster and Midway City.

The onsite facility incorporates CNG fuel dispensing systems capable of simultaneously time-fueling of 15 trucks and a fast-fill station, according to MCSD. The project also included the upgrade of the Southern California Edison electrical service to the entire MCSD facility, along with installation of safety systems and ventilation necessary for an urban CNG fueling facility located near a residential neighborhood.

The station was constructed by Long Beach-based Diversified Project Services International Inc. Part of the funding for the installation costs came from a $250,000 Clean Transportation funding grant from the Mobile Source Air Pollution Reduction Review Committee.

MCSD's return on investment (ROI) for the purchase, installation, and operation of the facility is an estimated six years. The annunal ROI calculation is based on the current fuel use of the 15-truck fleet, the cost of the equipment at today's prices, and estimates of ongoing operational costs when matched against the annual cost of using diesel as fuel, MCSD said.
