President Bush has announced he has selected Mary Peters, former federal highway administrator, to succeed Norman Mineta as secretary of transportation. Peters headed the Federal Highway Administration
from 2001 until 2005 and is currently national director for transportation policy and consulting at HDR Inc., an engineering firm.
Pat Quinn, chairman of the American Trucking Association, lauded the Bush nomination.
“I have had the pleasure of serving with Mary Peters on the National Surface Transportation Policy and Revenue Study Commission and have been impressed with her insights into the challenges we face with maintaining and improving our nation’s infrastructure. I hope for an early Senate confirmation process so we can all benefit from her strong leadership of our nation’s transportation programs.”
Prior to heading FHWA, Peters spent 16 years with the Arizona Department of Transportation, according to the Associated Press. The Senate must confirm the nomination.
