Granger, Iowa-based Barr-Nunn Transportation has announced it is testing a new upgraded QualComm (satellite) unit called OmniVision, a real breakthrough in mobile computing.

The OmniVision platform is a framework of hardware, software and network infrastructure and contains a text-to-speech engine, so that drivers can listen to messages while driving. And the system features a new navigation service that offers turn-by-turn directions that can be read to the driver using its text-to-speech capability, enhancing safety and productivity.
The product runs Microsoft Windows operating system, making it a true computer rather than a "dumb" terminal such as the current OmniTracs system, and enabling future upgrades and software additions. These units are how the company tracks and communicates with its drivers and owner-operators.
A real plus is the four-times-per-hour GPS tracking on OmniVision units at no additional charge, giving the company more accurate asset tracking. Messaging costs are lower on OmniVision, and are message-based rather than character-based.
