Australian owner-operators plan to stop work starting tomorrow in a campaign for government-enforced rates that include fuel surcharges, 14-day payment periods, and licensing of loading agents and the road transport industry.
The truckers are expected to attend a stopwork meeting at Tarcutta, halfway between Melbourne and Sydney. About 150 truckers plan to hold a "slow drive" today, traveling at 60-70 kph on the highway to Sydney.
The Transport Workers Union is assisting the owner-operators in their campaign, according to TWU secretary John Allan. Allan said the recent rises in fuel prices have brought the issue to a head. He also said that owner-operators account for 80% of Australia's freight transport, meaning the action could have significant effects.
