A group of Australian truckers honked their horns as they drove to the Parliament House in Melbourne yesterday to demonstrate their support for a bill to expand workers' entitlements.
According to Associated Press reports, more than 100 owner-operators belonging to the Transport Workers Union gathered to support the Fair Employment Bill, which is scheduled to be debated in state parliament today.
TWU state secretary Bill Noonan said if the bill passed, it would enable independent truckers to have their contracts reviewed, and would also provide a low-cost, easily accessible industrial relations system accessible to contractors.
The Fair Employment Bill is designed to give equality to about 230,000 workers, who were stripped of their entitlements when state awards were abolished by the previous government.
If passed, the workers would retain the right to annual leave, bereavement leave, sick leave, parental leave and set hours of work, AP reported.
