Strike Averted at East and Gulf Coast Ports

A looming strike at East and Gulf Coast ports has been avoided as the months-long labor negotiations finally reached a tentative agreement. Late Friday, Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service Director George H. Cohen, who has been moderating the negotiations since last year, issued a statement indicating that a tentative agreement had been reached regarding the Master Agreement between the United States Maritime Alliance and the International Longshoremen’s Association.

FTR Associates has released preliminary data showing January Class 8 truck net orders at 22,235, 7% higher than December but down 11% year-over-year. Orders for Class 8 vehicles have been above the 20,000 mark for the past four months, showing some strength after a soft period mid-year 2012.
