Navistar International's TerraStar Class 4-5 truck, introduced a year ago with real-wheel-drive only, is now available as a 4x4.

It is being displayed at the NTEA Work Truck Show in Indianapolis.

The high-mobility offshoot will use a Dana front-driving steer axle with a Magna chain-drive transfer case and associated driveline, said Jim Hebe, senior vice president of North American sales operations. Its cab and chassis sit 5.7 inches higher than on a 4x2 version.

The 4x4 TerraStar will serve many users who venture off-road in muddy and loose soil, he said. Applications include construction, public utility and landscaping.

Both versions use the 6.4-liter Maxx Force 7 V-8 diesel that's rated at 300 horsepower and 660 pounds-feet of torque. Transmission is a 6-speed Allison 1000 automatic. Regular, Extended and Crew Cabs are available, as are a variety of wheelbases and other chassis options.

The TerraStar 4x4 will be priced against the F-450 and 550 4x4s from Ford, the leader in those weight classes, Hebe said. It will built at Navistar's vocational plant in Garland, Tex.
