Snap-on's Innovation Works has introduced a new device that pinpoints the source of noise and vibration in underhood, undercar and vehicle interiors.

The new THEBIS Noise and Vibration Diagnostic Unit features six separate channels to allow selectable inputs and an LCD display for waveform visualization, frequency adjustment, recording events and voice memo functions. Four inductive clamps pick up vibrations and noise from the chassis and driveline, while two vent transducers pick up sounds from various locations in a vehicle's drivetrain.

"It is designed to selectively diagnose drivetrain noises, bearing noises and suspension rattles as well as engine noises and chassis squeaks," said Michael DeKeuster, category manager for Snap-on.

The device comes with a listening wand and contact probe for use as an electronic stethoscope, and a headphone set and microphone for recording voice memos. The unit can download recorded .wav files to a PC, and recorded files can also be stored on a USB memory stick, which is included with the unit. A 10-channel band-pass filter allows users to selectively tune out undesired background noises.
