Wingman, the new air flow control product from Airman Inc., has demonstrated a more than 9% increase in a miles-per-gallon live test, the company says.
The "mini-skirt" was installed on a Class 8 trailer loaded to 79,800 pounds and driven by the rig's owner on a 500-mile run from Missoula, Mont., to Miles City, Mont.
The Wingman has all the operational features of its predecessor, the AirWedge, including superb ground clearance, high trailer stability in cross winds and spray control in wet weather.
Airman Inc. is slated to receive its CARB certification this fall.
Wingman is tucked-in next to the rear axles and moves with the axles. Wingman's compact design prevents damage from curbs, railroads, or large elevation changes in skirt-unfriendly docks. Because Wingman is so short, under-trailer access is not impeded. The product's design also provides constant mileage benefits for all axle configurations, the company says.
Airman has been developing air flow controls for Class 8 trailers since 2005. The company released its first product, the AirWedge, in 2009, and developed the Wingman in late 2011.
