GUADALAJARA, MEXICO -- At first glance the photos of this trucking show may look a lot like what you will see at major events in the U.S. But look a little closer at the Spanish writing in the background and the pretty models. These photos were shot in Guadalajara, Mexico, during the nation’s largest truck and bus show, Expo Transporte, which opened Nov. 20. Most of the low-hanging aerodynamic fruit has already been plucked from the engineering tree. Truck makers and their design teams are now actively exploring options they would have ignored a decade ago. It's all about the cost of fuel.
The big shift to slope-nosed aero trucks began nearly 20 years ago, and since then engineers and designers have been refining the design. Today we see tweaks and twists yielding just the tiniest of gains, yet they are all steps in the right direction. What follows is a pictorial review of some of the changes we've seen in recent years -- some dramatic, some very subtle, but all aimed at killing fewer bugs.

The Ride & Drive event at the Green Fleet Conference in Phoenix Oct. 1 gave attendees a chance to drive everything from Segways and an electric Smart Car to bi-fuel heavy-duty pickups and a medium-duty electric hybrid. Here's a sampling of the cargo vans and commercial trucks on display.

The Technology & Maintenance Council of ATA said 128 technicians from around the U.S. won their way to Pittsburgh for the 2013 SuperTech competition by topping hundreds more competitors in state-level contests. SuperTech, now in its ninth year, is the highest level in the nationwide competition that encourages talented young people to become truck technicians and honors them for their prowess.
