Snowplows were a common sight on highways from the Middle Atlantic region to New England this morning, as winter weather continued to make for slippery roads and cold blasts far into the South.
The Weather Channel reported light snow in many Northeast cities, including New York, Hartford and Boston. Gusty winds are also a problem.
In Pennsylvania, snow and ice are making highway travel hazardous. Interstate 80 is reported to be in good condition, but officials said some of the secondary roads are snowpacked and slippery.
The temperature dipped below freezing as far south as Orlando, Fla. Boone, N.C., reported a 40 below zero wind chill this morning as they dug out of 6 inches of snow, which led to hundreds of accidents yesterday.
In Alabama, authorities closed some roads due to icy conditions, including Bankhead Parkway in Huntsville, Highway 431 in Chambers County, and Alabama Highway 50 from Lafayette to the Tallapoosa County line.
More bitter cold, winds and snow are forecast for the Upper Midwest. Four to 6 inches of snow are expected in northeastern Minnesota, 1 to 3 in the southern part of the state and much of Wisconsin. Four inches of show are expected in Iowa. This will fall on top of record snowfall in much of the region.
Forecasters say the frigid air will hang around through Christmas, allowing the winter precipitation on the ground to linger.
