The Associated Press reported Monday that the fine for driving a truck higher than 13 ft. 6 inches through the westbound tube of the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel is going up as of July 1.

The current penalty is $97 if the case is prosecuted in Norfolk, $86 in Hampton. No points are assigned.
Starting July 1, commercial drivers who have to be turned around because they're over 13-6 will be assessed as much as $500 and an additional three points to their driver's licenses.
According to authorities, over-height trucks are the leading cause of traffic tie-ups in the westbound tube of the bridge-tunnel, where 632 were turned around in January alone. The process can cause huge traffic jams in both directions.
Electronic measuring equipment has been installed at Norfolk International Terminals, where signs warn truckers of the height restriction. Trucks that trigger the height-detection equipment are stopped, and drivers are given maps showing detours.
