Citing increased demand from its 12 contracted customers, TuSimple, a San Diego, California-based self-driving truck technology company, will increase the number of trucks in fully autonomous operation from 11 to 40 by June of this year, the company said.

The company currently makes three to five fully-autonomous trips per day for customers on three different routes in Arizona and plans to add an additional route from Arizona to Texas early this year. TuSimple’s trucks make daily fully-autonomous trips from depot-to-depot, requiring both highway and local street driving.

The company’s technology is Level 4 autonomous, according to TuSimple, which means that its trucks do not require intervention from a driver while all of its features are engaged, according to SAE International’s J3016TM Levels of Driving Automation standards.

TuSimple also announced that it is working with Cummins and other suppliers to enable powertrain integration with its autonomous technologies.

"Exactly one year after debuting our prototype system at CES 2018, we're now running up to five commercial trips a day in Arizona, expanding our fleet and moving quickly toward our goal of creating the first commercial self-driving truck," said Xiaodi Hou, founder, president and chief technology officer of TuSimple. "We are making tremendous progress towards the commercialization of our technology and trucking ecosystem with key Tier 1 partners like Cummins. The viability and power of our autonomous truck solutions is being proven daily on highways and local streets."
