Truck Speed Limits At Issue In Illinois and Tennessee
Legal truck speed limits could rise in Illinois and decline in Tennessee according to Wednesday press reports
Legal truck speed limits could rise in Illinois and decline in Tennessee according to Wednesday press reports.
Tuesday, the Illinois State Senate voted to override Gov. Rod Blagojevich's veto of a measure that would raise the highway speed limit for trucks from 55 mph to 65 mph, the same limit that applies to cars. Further action is required by the Illinois House.
Meanwhile, the Tennessee Department of Transportation is considering lower speed limits for big trucks and lane restrictions in metropolitan areas. A decision will come next year according to columnist Ginny MacDonald in The Birmingham (Ala.)News.
"The truck speed limit would drop from 70 mph to 55 mph and confine trucks to the right lanes. Tennessee air pollution control officials say the changes would help fight air pollution," a item in MacDonald's Wednesday column read.
"Transportation officials have been reluctant to make the change because they say speed-limit reductions to improve air quality should apply to all vehicles. They claim enacting different limits for cars and trucks would produce safety hazards."
