During the Truckload Carriers Association’s annual convention in Las Vegas, TCA and CarriersEdge named Illinois-based Nussbaum Transportation and Massachusetts-based Boyle Transportation the Best Overall Fleets in the Best Fleet to Drive For contest.

The Best Fleets to Drive For contest, now in its 13th year, is an annual survey and contest that recognizes the North American for-hire trucking companies who provide the best workplace experience for their drivers. To be considered, fleets must be nominated by a company driver or independent contractor working with them, after which they are evaluated across a broad range of categories reflecting current best practices in human resources.

Both Boyle Transportation and Nussbaum Transportation have been named to the Best Fleets Top 20 multiple times, and for the first time in the contest’s history, both companies have won in the same order for the second year in a row. Nussbaum Transportation (417 drivers) won in the large carrier category, and Boyle Transportation (145 drivers) won in the small carrier category.

Nussbaum in recent years has focused its energy on building community and creating programs focused on personal and team-based development and growth.

Boyle was a very visible part of the U.S. vaccine distribution process, and has utilized this publicity to highlight how vital trucking is to the world. The fleet also continued to invest in proprietary mobile technology, helping to remove many unknown variables on the road for its drivers.

“Throughout the pandemic, these two fleets demonstrated excellence in their ability to adapt to the ever-changing situation on the ground, while at the same time, making sure their drivers have what they need to stay safe," said CarriersEdge CEO Jane Jazrawy.

The Best Fleets to Drive For survey and contest is open to any fleet operating 10 or more trucks. Nominated fleets are evaluated in areas such as: driver compensation, pension and benefits, professional development, driver and community support, and safety record. The highest scoring fleet in each category is named an Overall Winner during TCA’s Annual Convention.

2020 Highway Angel of the Year

TCA named Royford Burris, a professional truck driver with Stevens Transport of Dallas, Texas, the 2020 Highway Angel of the Year.

Since 1997, TCA’s Highway Angel program has recognized professional truck drivers who have selflessly helped others while on the job. From each year’s recipients, one is selected as Highway Angel of the Year because he or she best embodies the spirit of the program

Burris was recongized for responding to a vehicle accident while traveling along U.S. Highway 63 in Arkansas. He, and another motorist, extinguished the flames of a passenger vehicle that had collided with a passenger van. He rescued the only surviving passenger of the accident, a teenage girl who was trapped in the front passenger seat. The accident claimed the lives of two adults and a 6-month-old baby.

“I’ve never seen anything like it,” Burris said. “Once I saw those cars, I knew that it was my duty to stop and help in any way I could. I’m sorry I couldn’t save the others.”
