South Carolina will soon ban tractor-trailers from the left lanes of the state's widest highways, including I-77.

On most interstates that are three lanes or wider in each direction, large trucks will only be allowed to use the right two lanes, reports The Charlotte Observer.
The rules, approved last week by the South Carolina Department of Transportation Commission, will take effect once signs are installed - probably next spring.
Officials tested the restrictions for the past year on two 10-mile sections of I-85 in Spartanburg and Anderson counties. The number of crashes ell slightly, and the number of crashes with injuries dropped significantly.
The lane bans apply to trucks with three or more axles. Violators will be fined $100.
Rick Todd, South Carolina Trucking Assn. president, told the paper he is concerned that the new rules will force car drivers to miss road signs or weave between trucks to merge.
"This will not solve the problems of aggressive driving, or driver inattention, of tailgating, of speeding, of DUI," he said, "all the things that cause collisions and fatalities.
