Schneider National Inc. is implement a new per diem pay package option effective Jan. 1, 2006.
Under the program, Schneider will reimburse eligible company drivers based on a portion of their mileage rate, tax-free, for each night spent away from home,
lowering taxable income and increasing take-home pay.
Per diem is defined as a "per day allowance" for daily expenses. Specifically, the program benefits Schneider company drivers handling mileage-based work. For each night "away from home" – a 24-hour period as defined by the IRS - drivers are reimbursed up to $52 tax-free. Schneider can offer this option to its fleet because over-the-road driving has a high frequency of time away from home.
"Schneider continually looks for ways to deliver programs that make a difference in our drivers' lives," said Wayne Lubner, vice president, driver and contractor relations at Schneider National. "For drivers who are away from their families for extended periods of time, the per diem program can provide more take-home pay and is one more way that Schneider is offering choice and flexibility to its drivers."
Approximately 60-70 percent of Schneider's drivers will qualify for the program.
