Tuesday may be the best day to avoid Salt Lake City if you can help it.
The Utah Transportation Department is warning highway travelers that multiple Olympic events are set for Tuesday and the day could be the heaviest traffic day of the Olympics.
Nearly 160,000 spectators are expected to converge for several events. Four competitions are scheduled in the Park City and Heber City areas.
Travelers will encounter heavy traffic on I-80, especially eastbound in the morning and westbound in the afternoon. Snowbasin is scheduled to host the women's downhill competition; watch for major morning and early afternoon congestion on US-89. Downtown Salt Lake City will host figure skating, celebrations at the Olympic Medals Plaza and the "Light of the World" performance at the LDS Conference Center. The E Center will host two hockey games; anticipate heavy traffic in the surrounding area two hours before events begin and one-and-a-half hours after events end. Two hockey games at the Peaks Ice Arena, curling at the Ogden Ice Sheet and speed skating at the Utah Olympic Oval will cause increased traffic at each location.
You can find more information on the Olympic road closures at www.dot.state.ut.us or www.utahcommuterlink.com.
