SAF-Holland has identified a potential defect in its CBX Trailer Air Suspension Axle systems manufactured Oct. 8-13, 2013, and has notified federal safety officials of it. The defect affects about 2,500 dry van and flatbed trailers, whose manufacturers are notifying owners, the company said.

Several incidents of failing bolts have occurred, a spokesman said, but drivers were able to pull over and SAF-Holland is not aware of any reported accidents or injuries.

A specific lot of heat-treated pivot bolts used in its CBX 40 and CBX 23 suspension may experience failure due to improper processing, an SAF-Holland statement said.

It notified the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration of the potential defect on May 16. Serial numbers of all suspensions with the suspect bolts have been cross referenced to the trailers they were installed on.

“SAF-Holland takes safety of its customers very seriously,” said Steffen Schewerda, president of the company’s Trailer Suspension Systems Business Unit. “We are doing everything possible to ensure the fastest and most efficient replacement of the pivot bolts on the units affected.”

SAF-Holland and affected trailer manufacturers are conducting a voluntary safety recall at no charge to the trailer owners. All affected pivot bolts will be replaced. After replacement, the new bolts will be marked with a white paint dot on the head of the bolt.

SAF-Holland has provided a list of approved repair shops, replacement pivot bolts, repair instructions and billing information. Owners may contact SAF-Holland customer service at 888-396-6501.
