Shafer Gear Works, South Bend, Ind., is now doing business as Schafer Industries, with two divisions: Schafer Gear, the Gear Division, and Schafer Driveline, the Driveline Division.

Schafer Industries’ Gear Division has plants in South Bend and Fort Wayne, Ind., as well as in Rockford, Ill. The company’s 108,000-square-foot South Bend location produces high-volume gears for a variety of industrial applications; the 45,000-square-foot Rockford, Ill. plant produces larger gears for heavy applications; and the 12,000-square-foot facility in Fort Wayne, Ind., concentrates on high-precision, fine-pitch gears for aircraft and medical applications.

The Driveline Division, whose assets were acquired last year from Dana Holding Corp., has two production facilities in Ohio. The 120,000-square-foot assembly plant in Fredericktown produces axles for leisure, all-terrain and utility vehicles; transmissions and transaxles for ATVs; and related off-highway brake components and assemblies. The 30,000-square-foot facility in Blacklick produces aluminum gear housings, ductile iron differential cases and ductile iron brake components.

“The forward integration achieved by the combined gear and driveline capabilities uniquely positions Schafer Industries to offer new and better solutions for our customers,” noted Bipin N. Doshi, president and CEO.  “We’re now able to provide a wide range of services unseen in the industry, from consultative design services for custom projects to advanced prototyping.”

Established in 1934, Schafer Industries has been under its present ownership since1988.  The company is a diversified supplier to a variety of markets in North America including leisure vehicles, material handling, mining, power transmission, construction, locomotive, aircraft, medical, as well as automotive and heavy-duty truck markets. Schafer Industries also has international alliances in Italy, China and India.
