The National Highway Transportation and Safety Administration officially notified CMA and Double Coin Holdings that Double Coin Tires missing a load rating sidewall marker are not a threat to vehicle safety. NHTSA said there was no additional obligation for providing a remedy or notification to the problem.

“NHTSA has decided that CMA and DCHL have met their burden of persuasion that the FMVSS No. 119 noncompliance is inconsequential to motor vehicle safety,” said the agency in a statement. “CMA and DCHL are exempted from the obligation of providing notification of and a remedy for that noncompliance.”

CMA originally notified NHTSA in September that 1.75 million Double Coin branded radial tires had non-compliant sidewall markings but posed no safety or performance issues.  The Double Coin tires in question were missing a load range symbol, but included other redundant markings that corresponded to load range capacities.

After internal revisions, CMA and Double Coin placed the additional mark on all sidewalls of tires being sold in the U.S.

“We thank the NHTSA and ODI offices for their timely conclusion to this matter,” said Aaron C. Murphy, vice president of CMA. “The very important factor is that the tires meet all safety and endurance standards and are neither defective nor performing poorly.”
