Nevada has tweaked its motor carrier trip permit requirements, making it mandatory for commercial vehicles to obtain a 24-hour temporary registration trip permit before entering or operating the vehicle in the state.
Before this new standard, vehicles were allowed to travel to the first available vendor in the state to purchase a permit. It will take effect July 1.

In addition, there are new laws governing the declaration of vehicle weights. If a person is cited for operating a vehicle weighing more than the registered weight, he or she will be required to reregister at the vehicle's gross or combined weight rating.

Not only will the registered owner have to pay the additional registration fees and a minimum administrative fine of $500, they will also have to shell out criminal penalties, which can go as high as $2,500 for repeat offenders. These penalties do not apply to tow trucks or persons with approved farmer or rancher exemptions.

These new requirements are contained in Assembly Bill 372, which was passed by the 2009 Nevada Legislature.
