The Michigan Department of Transportation will reopen a 1.5-mile stretch of Interstate 75 near the Detroit-Windsor international border crossing this week.
The section will be accessible starting July 2, five months ahead of schedule.
As part of the $230 million Ambassador Bridge Gateway Project, the stretch was reconstructed to improve commercial traffic efficiency exiting the Ambassador Bridge, eliminate truck traffic from local streets and support future traffic needs. The section runs from Rosa Parks Boulevard to Clark Street in southwest Detroit.
"We are looking forward to the completion of this project, which is now more than 85 percent complete and will contribute to the long-term economic prosperity of this community, our region and the state," said Tony Kratofil, MDOT region engineer.
The Department of Transportation will still need to close the section intermittently during off-peak hours. These lane closures will be announced to the public in advance.
The Gateway Project will continue through the end of this year as work is completed on a number of key ramps and bridges.
