The 2013 Fleet Safety Conference, scheduled for June 25-27 at the Renaissance Schaumburg Convention Center Hotel, in Schaumburg, Ill., will feature a session on what fleets should know about the federal government's increased scrutiny of the health and wellness of commercial drivers, from tougher medical card requirements to sleep disorders.

Driver Health and the Safety Connection will be presented by David McKinney, M.D. M.P.H., California Occupational Medical Professionals.

Some of the topics McKinney will cover include:

  • The new National Registry of Certified Medical Examiners and what it measn for driver health and safety

  • Driver exemptions update -- what you need to know

  • Wellness and the commercial driver

  • How can a commercial driver manage a chronic medical condition while keeping his or her medical certification?

  • What you need to know about sleep apnea

This session is part of an education track focused on heavy-duty vehicles coordinated by Heavy Duty Trucking magazine. Other trucking topics include:

  • CSA: What it is, where it's been, where it's headed

  • Medium-duty truck safety

  • Making driver scorecards work

In addition, general conference keynote sessions will cover topics such as distracted driving, legal pitfalls to avoid when doing MVR checks, benchmarking/best practices, and using predictive analytics to identify at-risk drivers.

The Fleet Safety Conference is put on by Bobit Business Media, publisher of HDT and other fleet publications such as Automotive Fleet and Work Truck magazine.
