A little more than 100 truck drivers and warehouse employees at the Con-way Freight terminal in Laredo, Texas have voted to join the Teamsters Union.

The 55-49 decision makes this the first time employees at what is one of the nation’s largest less-than-truckload carriers have voted to be represented by the union. The two sides now have to work out a labor agreement.
“This is a great victory for the workers at Con-way and we hope this campaign spreads,” said Frank Perkins, President of San Antonio-based Local 657, which represents the workers. “These workers are seeking fair wages, respect on the job and job security. They also want to have a pension and improved health care coverage.”
Perkins said the Teamsters targeted the location for organizing because Laredo is the busiest inland port in the United States.
The union hopes to score other victories with Con-way workers, with it recently filing for organizing elections at terminals in Los Angeles, Santa Fe Springs and San Fernando, California.
