Watch out for construction delays during the next six weeks on Interstate 80 west of Reno, Nev.

The California Department of Transportation is building three 12-foot-high, 12-foot-wide culverts to allow wildlife to pass under the highway. Special fencing will direct the animals to the undercrossings.
The undercrossings are made necessary because of an 11-mile-long continuous median barrier that won't allow any animals to cross through. The median barrier is part of an $86 million highway project that will involve 11 miles of resurfacing and six new bridges, scheduled to be finished in 2004.
Work began Sunday evening. Crews will not work on weekends, including Fridays, when traffic is heaviest.
This week, westbound and eastbound lanes will be reduced to one each in a one-mile stretch between the Boca Bridge and Floriston this week. Trucks with permit loads wider than 8 feet 6 inches or longer than 100 feet will be rerouted.
The following week, the work will move farther east, causing intermittent delays on an 11-mile stretch of freeway for at least six weeks.
