Holland, a regional less-than-truckload transportation provider, has launched a driver apprentice program to help it recruit those looking to earn a commercial driver’s license, as well as licensed CDL operators seeking additional experience or license endorsements – with special funding for military veterans.

The Driver Training Program, which is open to anyone looking for a career in trucking, aims to enhance recruitment efforts and address the driver shortage.

“We are proud to partner with the Department of Labor and the Department of Veterans Affairs through this apprenticeship program,” said Rocky Whaley, Driver Training Program Manager. Military veterans are eligible to receive paid training through Holland, as well as additional funding support through the Post-9/11 G.I. Bill.

Veterans who have a CDL but still need to meet mileage requirements or earn proper endorsements will work with industry professionals to complete these objectives while using their current skills. Veterans who currently do not have a CDL will enter Holland’s Dock-to-Driver Program and grow into the industry through paid CDL training and professional mentorships.

The apprenticeship program is supported by a period of mentorship from seasoned drivers. The company currently employs more than 300 professional driver mentors and anticipates an increase to 400 by the end of 2019. Holland also employs nine driving instructors at strategic locations.

The program has launched in 24 terminal locations with plans to expand to 30 terminals by year’s end. Holland anticipates gaining more than 350 drivers through the program by 2020.

In addition to the partnership with the Department of Labor and the VA, Holland has also received grant funds for $40,000 to support the training program. The funds were approved at the end of 2017 when Holland received the Department of Labor Apprenticeship certification. The grant is from Fastport, a veteran employment software company with a mission to connect veterans to career opportunities. Fastport works with Holland to provide veterans with meaningful careers and to build a pipeline between the military community and the trucking industry.
