A big hike in truck tolls is likely in store for any of the routes managed by the Illinois Tollway Authority, based on a tentative budget that would increase spending for next year.

A tentative budget for next year calls for increased spending for operating and maintenance, debt service and road replacement and renewal costs. To pay for it tolls would increase for big rigs by 40% in 2014, 10% in 2016 and another 10% in 2017, according to the website of the Daily Herald newspaper.
Truckers managed to avoid toll increases in 2012, when there was at least an 80% increase for motorists.
In an interview with the newspaper, Mid-West Truckers Association Executive Vice President Don Schaefer said the trucking industry is not happy about the hikes and that it cause some trucks to take other routes.
A final vote on the budget, including the toll increases, is set for December.
The Illinois Tollway Authority operates the Jane Addams Memorial Tollway (I-90/I-39/US 51), Veterans Memorial Tollway (I-355), Ronald Reagan Memorial Tollway (I-88) and the Tri-State Tollway (I-94/I-294).
