Nov. 10 – The season’s first major storm brought heavy snow and traffic delays to the Lake Tahoe area in California and Nevada this weekend, and more snow is expected this week.
Kingvale, CA, reported 10-13 inches of snow over a 24-hour period ending Saturday afternoon.
Chains were mandatory Saturday on some Sierra highways, including Interstate 80 over Donner Summit and Highway 99 over Carson Pass. Nevada Route 431 over the Mount Rose Summit southwest of Reno was closed for about an hour Saturday because of an avalanche. Road crews had to dynamite and remove snow from a steep slope above the roadway before reopening it.
The National Weather Service is calling for a chance of more snow in the region today and tomorrow.
In addition, a major storm developed yesterday on the high plains from Colorado northward through the Dakotas. The Weather Channel expected heavy stow accompanied by powerful winds, with gusts as high as 70 mph. Blizzard conditions were expected to sweep parts of the Dakotas and Minnesota today, while high winds hammer the Great Lakes.
