West Australian truck drivers began their second day of protest against high fuel prices yesterday, blockading Fremantle Port and interrupting deliveries.
According to Associated Press reports, the truckers have been asking the federal government to increase haulage rates, claiming rising fuel costs and incompetent government subsidies are forcing people out of the industry.
About 100 trucks blocked the entrance to Fremantle port yesterday morning. Transport Workers Union members say the protest could continue for several more weeks.
The TWU have received support from the Maritime Union of Australia, whose members cooperated fully with the blockade, and also plan to join a mass public protest rally against escalating fuel prices, organized by the Motor Trades Association on Sept. 7.
