Cummins showcased its new refuse vehicle engine lineup for 2013 at the WasteExpo conference in New Orleans. The company said it is offering a complete range of clean diesel and natural gas engines. For all of its existing base engines, the company said it improved fuel economy by up to 2 percent for 2013.

Cummins said that for 2013, it plans to offer two clean diesel choices, the ISX12 and ISL9. The company said it improved its products using fully integrated components, such as the XPI fuel system, VGT Turbocharger and Cummins Aftertreatment System with diesel particulate filter and selective catalytic reduction. All engines will share a new single electronic control module that will manage the engine and Cummins Aftertreatment System. The company said these engines meet the EPA’s 2013 regulations and the 2014 EPA greenhouse gas and the U.S. Department of Transportation fuel-efficiency standards.

The 2013 ISX12 is rated from 320 to 385 hp (239-287 kW). The company said modifications to the VGT Turbocharger, along with optimized calibrations, make this engine more reliable. The ISX12 also features high-efficiency water, fuel, and lube pumps to help reduce parasitic loss and improve fuel economy by up to 2 percent when compared with the company’s 2012 model-year engine. The ISX12 offers Front- and Rear-Engine Power Take-Off.

The 2013 ISL9 is rated from 260 to 380 hp (194-283 kW) and features replaceable wet liners, roller followers, by-pass oil filtration, and targeted piston cooling. For 2013, Cummins said it added an air intake throttle to improve the exhaust gas recirculation system’s efficiency. The ISL9 will also feature the NanoNet media in the fuel filter, which provides up to 10 times-better fuel injector protection, according to Cummins.

The Cummins Westport natural gas engines, the ISL G and ISX12 G, use the same base engine and main components as their diesel engine counterparts, according to the company. They also feature Cummins Westport's proprietary spark-ignited combustion technology with Stoichiometric cooled Exhaust Gas Recirculation (SEGR) and a maintenance-free Three-Way Catalyst (TWC), the company stated.

The ISL G is available with hp ratings from 250 hp to 320 hp (186-239 kW). It shares a full-skirted block with Cummins ISL9 diesel engine for improved reliability and durability, according to Cummins.

The Cummins Westport ISX12 G is based on Cummins ISX12 diesel. It offers horsepower ratings from 320 to 350 (239-261 kW) and provides up to 1,450 lb.-ft. of torque (1966 N•m). Options include engine braking and either an automatic or manual transmission. Production of this engine began in April and full production is slated to begin in August.

Cummins said the ISX12 G and ISL G are EPA 2013 certified and meet the EPA’s 2014 GHG and fuel efficiency standards. In addition, the ISX12 G and ISL G can operate on compressed natural gas, liquefied natural gas, or renewable natural gas.
