YRC Worldwide has received the highest ranking from the EPA's SmartWay Transport Partnership program, for the fifth consecutive year.
The company earned the ranking for its contribution to fuel efficiency and environmental sustainability.

YRC, which has now received the SmartWay Excellence Award twice, has been a charter member of the program since inception in 2004. The company recently funded the maiden SmartWay International Summit to educate supply chain professionals on greenhouse gas reduction.

"The SmartWay Partnership enables us to work with our vendors and customers to achieve reductions in greenhouse gas emissions," said Mike Kelley, chief sustainability officer at YRC. "SmartWay is a progressive, positive and pragmatic program for the transportation sector."

"YRC Worldwide understands that its investment in sustainability benefits all stakeholders, including employees, customers, business partners, the communities in which it operates," said Andrew Savitz, author of "Triple Bottom Line," who spoke at the conference.

Other sustainable efforts include joining the company's two brands, adding fuel-efficient tires to its over the road fleet and testing diesel electric hybrids in the Northeast. The company also has restrictions on speed and idling to reduce emissions.

The SmartWay Transport Partnership aims to achieve fuel savings of up to 150 million barrels of fuel per year. The partnership brings together major freight shippers, trucking companies, railroads, logistics companies and trade/professional associations to pursue mutually beneficial efficiencies that result in emissions reductions and other environmental improvements, as well as cost savings to the companies.
