A bill that would have allowed city police officers to enforce truck safety regulations in West Virginia has died in the state Senate.

According to published reports, the bill's sponsor, Sen. John Mitchell, originally intended the bill, SB420, to expand truck enforcement. Currently, state police and sheriff's departments have that authority, but not municipal officers.
However, he worked to kill the bill after an amendment was added to make sure that those enforcing the laws had education in truck enforcement. Mitchell said the amendment would make it more difficult to enforce truck safety laws.
The amendment, requested by the Public Service Commission, would have required all officers to complete the eight-week certification course for PSC inspectors before they could enforce truck safety regulations.
