Some truckers are getting a big surprise when they idle their rigs in New York state - a ticket.

A state law in effect since August 1999 limits idling to five minutes or less, unless the truck is stopped for more than two hours when the temperature's below 25 degrees. Trucks that are working in a mine or quarry, or those that are using power for an auxiliary purpose (like a dump truck or concrete mixer), are also exempt.
"From what I can tell from the number of phone calls, it seems they've begun to step up the enforcement," says Kendra Pollard, safety director of the New York Motor Truck Assn.
The fine can be as high as $350. Although enforcement is more intense in the New York metro area, tickets are being handed out all over the state. Many times it is a result of neighborhood complaints.
