The New Year is off to a bang on the heavy trucks front with Volvo Trucks North America announcing that it will debut an all-new, Class 8 VNL tractor later this month.
The new truck will make its virtual debut online at 2 p.m. EST on Jan. 23. You can sign up to watch the reveal here in real time.
Volvo has also released a new video teasing the new truck. Set at an unidentified truck stop, the new truck — in zebra-stripe camouflage and devoid of OEM badging — garners a crowd of curious truck drivers, who examine the truck up close and wonder what it is and which OEM made it.
There aren’t a lot of details readily apparent in the video, and the camouflage paint scheme throws off a viewer’s perspective to a certain extent. That said, the new VNL appears to sport a taller, wider, front grille and a highly aerodynamic, rear-sloping roofline.
There are also what appear to be autonomous driving sensor arrays amounted at the upper-back of the cab. It also looks like some design cues from the Volvo SuperTruck 2 made their way onto the new truck.
With new California Air Resources Board and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency greenhouse gas emissions regulations coming into effect in 2027, it looks like this new Volvo VNL is the first Class 8 truck to enter the market with those regulations and requirements dictating many of its design and powertrain features.
It will be interesting to see what additional details can be gleaned during the truck’s virtual launch later this month. Editors will get a hands-on premiere at the Volvo Truck Plant in New River Valley, Virginia, in early February.

Automotive camouflage striping makes it difficult to see many details. But the new VNL appears to have a taller and wider stance than the current truck.

Of course, HDT will have Jack Roberts at that launch and provide detailed reports on the new truck, likely including a test drive. So stay tuned for more information on Volvo’s new VNL.
