The Virginia Senate passed legislation to widen Interstate 81 from four lanes to eight using dedicated truck-only toll lanes.

The House version of the proposal backed off the original provision to build two truck-only toll lanes in each direction, and instead left the decision of whether or not to impose tolls to the Commonwealth Transportation Board. However, Republican Senator William Wampler added an amendment that would limit tolls to commercial vehicles, exempting passenger cars, motorcycles and pickup trucks.
The Virginia Trucking Assn. testified that singling out trucks for tolls would drive truck traffic to other routes, including U.S. 29 and I-95.
