Vintage '47 Freightliner on the Auction Block Wednesday
Millions of dollars worth of real estate goes on the auction block this Wednesday as Consolidated Freightways continues to sell off its assets
Millions of dollars worth of real estate goes on the auction block this Wednesday as Consolidated Freightways continues to sell off its assets.
But what will spark interest in some bidders this week is the sale of a piece of CF history -- a 1947 Freightliner rig -- one of the first cab-over-engine trucks built at Freightliner's truck assembly shop in Portland, Ore.
As part of the largest real estate sale in transportation history -- 220 total properties with an appraised value more than $400 million -- Consolidated Freightways announced it is selling more than 20 truck terminals through an open auction process scheduled Wednesday.
Among those assets is Freightline No. 162. The bidding will start at $75,000, said Mike Brown, a CF corporate spokesman, adding Freightliner will be one of the bidders.
When it came off the assembly line in 1947, Jackie Robinson had just become the first black major league baseball player. President Harry Truman unveiled his Truman Doctrine, and Bing Crosby sang "White Christmas" for the first time.
No. 162 is believed to be the only surviving model of this vintage. The truck was fully restored to authentic detail in 1988, Brown said. A total of 4,000 hours was put into the facelift, right down to the leather "wiggle-waggle" pull cord on the air horn, and an original 1947 driver's first-aid kit.
During the restoration, CF located an original 1947 trailer (No. 135), It was restored and now accompanies No. 162.
Brown said interested parties don't have much time left to bid on the truck.
Properties will be auctioned off, beginning at 9 a.m. (Pacific Daylight Time) on Wednesday in the offices of Latham & Watkins, 633 W. Fifth Street, Suite 600, Los Angeles, Calif.
For more information, bidders should visit the company's web site at www.cfterminals.com.
