Logging trucks could be rerouted through Vail, CO, after a timber-hauling road was closed because of a wetlands violation.

Earlier this month, the U.S. Forest Service announced a proposal to route up to 12 logging trucks a day down the face of Vail Mountain on Mill Creek Road and into Vail Village. Some local and federal officials say the logging truck traffic would create noise, dust and safety problems for the mountain bikers and hikers who use the road during the summer.
However, key officials say they are willing to compromise, since it looks like this is the only way to get the timber out. Vail Resorts has cleared 100 acres of trees. They plan to open 520 acres of new skiing terrain in January, but 1 million board feet of timber are stacked next to the newly cleared ski runs.
The Forest Service is taking public comment until Jan. 3 on its proposal, which would allow logging traffic only during limited periods, from 5 a.m. to 6 a.m. and 11 a.m. to noon on weekdays.
