The state of Utah has launched a Clean Diesel Trucking initiative, which offers $600,000 in federal and state grants for anti-idling devices

The funding will go to help 15 trucking companies install anti-idling devices, such as auxiliary power units, in 30 trucks. The Environmental Protection Agency's State Clean Diesel Grant Program provided $350,000 in funding, while more than $235,000 came from the state's Department of Environmental Quality, according to the Associated Press.

The initiative is expected to cut emissions by 70 percent. The APU devices, which are typically 3-by-4-foot units, provide cab heating and air conditioning while keeping batteries charged, according to the Salt Lake Tribune.

Utah's anti-idling laws prohibit engine idling for more than 15 minutes unless power is needed in the sleeper.
