An appeals judge has ruled that a Tennessee truckstop can go ahead with work putting up an identical replacement for its sign that towers above I-65 near Peytonsville.
The sign has been a fixture at the TravelCenters of America location at the Goose Creek Bypass exit since the truckstop opened in 1969, according to The Tennessean. The company took the sign down because of structural problems, but when they wanted to put up a sign the same size, county officials said it violated zoning regulations limiting the size of signs.
The Tennessee Court of Appeals overturned a county ruling, saying the sign should be included in a grandfather clause. Truckstop owners felt strongly that if they lost the sign, it would be hard to attract enough customers to stay in business.
"These signs are an integral part of the business establishment, much the same as the building in which the service station is housed," said Judge William Inman in his ruling.
County officials have 60 days to decide whether to appeal the case to the state's Supreme Court. In the meantime, truckstop owners are waiting on putting up the new sign until the legal situation is straightened out.
