Four trucking companies have filed a class-action lawsuit against local governments in southeast Michigan, saying they have no authority to enforce local regulations against trucks.

According to the Associated Press, the suit was filed against five counties, the city of Detroit, and 28 other cities and townships in those counties. The truckers claim that a 1995 federal law does not allow local governments to enforce ordinances aimed at trucks, and that safety enforcement is the state's job.
Local officials say they need to enforce truck safety regulations because the state doesn't do a good enough job. Truckers, however, tend to view it as simple revenue enhancement. A 2000 law allows local governments to keep 70 percent of the fine money, with the rest going to libraries.
