Transport America, Egan, Minn., announced its acquisition of Birmingham, Ala.-based Southern Cal Transport. The merger will create a company with more than 2,200 drivers, making it one of the top 15 for-hire dry van truckload carriers in the United States.

At a time when many carriers have been moving away from asset-based models, Transport America said in its announcement that it "recognizes more than ever the market will need carriers that control their assets, bring excellent service and are committed to hiring quality drivers."

The combined companies will offer diverse capabilities, including over-the-road solo, teams, dedicated, regional, intermodal, intermodal drayage, and brokerage.

"I believe the Southern Cal and Transport America brands both are known for service excellence and have very similar cultures," says Scott Arves, CEO of Transport America. "I have a tremendous amount of respect for Ken Adams and Phil DeSimone, CEO and President respectively, and for the team of associates they have assembled."

Initially, the two companies will operate independently, preserving relationships, billing, contractual relationships, etc., Arves explained.

Transport America was founded in 1984. Southern Cal Transport was founded in 1995 and purchased by Ken Adams in 1998. The combined company employs more than 2,200 drivers and offers a broad portfolio of services in solo, team, dedicated, intermodal, drayage and brokerage services.
