The Technology & Maintenance Council of American Trucking Associations will hold TMCSuperTech2008, its fourth annual National Technician Skills Competition, Sept. 15-16, during TMC's 2008 Fall Meeting in Nashville.


Organized by TMC's Professional Technician Development Committee, TMCSuperTech2008 is designed to determine the industry's top technician through a qualifying written test and a variety of troubleshooting tests. The competition is a showcase for the high degree of skill and knowledge shown everyday by trucking industry technicians and acknowledges the "best of the best."

Any technician employed in the trucking industry is eligible to register for TMCSuperTech2008 for a $100 entry fee that also includes the cost of a one-year TMC Technician membership. Current TMC Technician members may register free of charge and verified champions of state technician skills contests may also register without charge.

TMCSuperTech2008 contestant orientation and the qualifying written exam will take place on Monday afternoon, followed by a welcome reception and announcement of the competition finalists on Monday evening.

The Hands-on Skill Challenge will be held on Tuesday.
The 14 skill stations include:
• Electrical
• Starting and charging
• Brakes
• Tires and Wheels
• Wheel Ends
• HVAC
• Engine
• Steering/Suspension
• PMI
• Drivetrain
• Service information
• Repair order
• Fasteners/Fastener repair
• Safety and Environmental

TMCSuperTech2008 first-, second- and third-place winners, along with those receiving the high score at each skill station, will be announced at Wednesday's Awards Luncheon. The first-place winner will have the choice of an expense-paid trip for two to either the 2009 Daytona 500, the Super Bowl, or equivalent package, plus other prizes. Second- and third-place winners will also receive trophies and valuable prizes.

Individuals who are awarded "Best in Skill" category from each of the skill stations will receive a Toughbook laptop and diagnostic tool package courtesy of Panasonic and Noregon Systems.

In addition to TMCSuperTech2008, PTDC is holding a Technician Training Fair on Wednesday, Sept. 17. The hands-on training sessions are designed for technicians, shop supervisors and fleet managers. Other TMC meeting attendees are also welcome to attend the training.

The training qualifies for National Automotive Technicians Education Foundation continuing education credits. The sessions will be repeated to maximize training opportunities.

• Diesel Particulate Filter Cleaning and Handling;
• Starting System Maintenance and Diagnostics;
• Filtration System Selection and Maintenance;
• Fastener Maintenance and Identification;
• Cooling System Maintenance;
• Commercial Tire Inflation and Monitoring Systems; and
• Lubricant and Sealants.
